The Institute for Patient- and Family-Centered Care prepared this document as a guide for Staff Liaisons. It explains how partnering with patient, resident, and family advisors can influence the quality improvment and patient safety. It also provides a few recommendations for planning ahead such as: determining the role of advisors in a quality improvement or safety project; establishing the number of advisors that should be involved in the effort; figuring out any special skills or experiences that the advisors will need; setting the timeframe for their participation; understanding whether any of the staff members have experience working with advisors; and determining who on the team will be identified as the champion or mentor for the advisors. In addition, this document offers training recommendations, suggestions from advisors who have served on quality and safety committees, tips from the field, and common quality terms and their definitions.
The Aligning Forces for Quality website will no longer be updated beginning May 31, 2015.
