When consumer leaders play roles equal in influence to other members of the multi-stakeholder Alliance, the consumers’ relationships and insights can enhance the impact and reach of Alliance efforts. Alliances can accelerate their work to improve health care quality and equity by developing a structure in which consumer leaders can influence important decisions, develop effective strategies, and mobilize their peers. Effective leadership begins with a clear understanding of roles and an ability to negotiate authority and tasks. This document describes results-based leadership skills that address role development, negotiation, decision-making, and accountability, providing commonsense tools to help Alliances strengthen consumer leadership.
