Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) have the promise to transform how health care is delivered by sharing financial awards among providers that realize savings in health care spending while improving quality. This article reviews the October 2011 regulatory policy statements related to the Medicare Shared Savings Program, clarifying some policies and altering others.

The Puget Sound Health Alliance and the State of
The way we pay for care impacts the way care is delivered. By paying for appropriate, preventive, and coordinated care, the health of Americans can improve. Everyone — consumers, providers, insurers, and employers — has a stake and role in helping shape a new system. Aligning Forces communities are working with national experts and one another to develop bold, creative and pragmatic payment reform strategies to reduce cost and improve the value and efficiency of care.
Together we can build a high-value health system truly focused on improving the health of those who seek care.
Oregon is one of the AF4Q Alliances that is spearheading an experiment with payment models. Five health plans and 14 physician practices are working together to improve care management for high-utilization patients. This program improves the care of almost 4,000 patients, incentivizes health plans and providers to collaborate, and could bring down overall health care costs. Stay tuned for more on their progress.
